Why didn't UAL think of that?  Could it be that you forget that they also have debts that you would be buying?>>

A bankrupcty sounds like a better idea for UAL.  Sell assets now, you've got fewer assets that earn for you, and you'll sell more again in the future, despite your currently formidable system.  Bankruptcy might afford the opportunity to do major corporate realignment.

UA can't sell a transpac or transatlantic premium (Biz or First) seat at retail to save their lives.  They need to reassess what they do as a carrier, and now's as a good a time as any.  Going into "hunker down" mode with hopeful blinders on will assure a Pan American outcome.  And many said UA would follow PA's experience when they bought the PA transpac routes and restyled themselves a global carrier.
