Airborne Announces 2nd-Quarter Profit July 30, 2002 By BLOOMBERG NEWS SEATTLE, July 29 (Bloomberg News) - Airborne Inc., an air delivery service, reported a second-quarter profit of $457,000 today. The company has eliminated jobs and closed offices to reduce costs. The result meant income of 1 cent a share, the company said; the quarter a year earlier had a net loss of $6.4 million, or 13 cents. Sales fell 0.2 percent, to $810.5 million. Airborne, like its competitors, has had fewer overnight shipments, a more profitable category, as companies have switched to cheaper deliveries by truck. Airborne, which had previously generated as much as 65 percent of its revenue from overnight shipments, created a unit to move goods by truck in April 2001. Airborne's total shipments rose 2.3 percent. The unit that delivers goods by truck accounted for almost 11 percent of the shipments within the United States, up from less than 1 percent a year earlier, the company said. Air shipments in the United States fell 7.8 percent, and Airborne said such shipments might be lower in the second half of 2002 than in the same period last year.
