FAA looking into Delta pilot's breathalyzer test

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) =97 Federal aviation officials were investigating=20
whether a pilot for a Delta regional carrier failed a breathalyzer test=20
Sunday before boarding his flight to Atlanta. The 28 passengers aboard were=
=20
removed at around 6:40 a.m., nearly a half-hour after scheduled departure=20
from the Wilmington International Airport, said Airport Director John=20
Rosborough. All passengers were diverted to other flights. Rosborough=20
couldn't confirm whether the co-pilot of the twin-engine plane failed the=20
test. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Christopher White said his=
=20
agency was investigating "the alleged violation of an alcohol-related=20
regulation regarding ASA Flight 4240." The pilot was not identified. FAA=
=20
guidelines say no crew member can have more than a 0.04 blood alcohol level=
=20
and may not drink alcohol within eight hours of duty. Violations can lead=20
to license revocation. Rosborough said the crew member was stopped from=20
boarding the plane at around 6 a.m. Sunday by a security officer with the=20
Transportation and Security Agency. The agency holds random alcohol=20
testing, but it was unclear why the pilot was stopped. Delta officials=20
said they were also investigating. Spokeswoman Katie Connell said the=20
flight was delayed due to a crew-related issue, but would not=20
elaborate. ASA, or Atlantic Southeast Airlines, is a Delta Connection=20
carrier that operates eight 50-seat jet aircraft to Atlanta from Wilmington=
=20
each day.
