Braniff put their Diesel 8s up for sale after the first bankruptcy in 1982
simply because there was no use for them in a reorganized carrier that flew
domestically. The 8's primary mission was South America. Their three B747s
were used for London and Hawaii flying (the SP flew MIA-BOG) and were not
crucial to the reorganization. That left a ton of B727s, some of which were
used for BN2 and BN3. My guess is BN would have transitioned to B737s or
A320s for domestic service as these aircraft are ideally suited for a heavy
frequency hub system based at DFW or MCI. Of the two, Braniff's jet
preference was always Boeing. The 8s came from the purchase of Panagra and
the resale market.
