Sky Harbor Recovering

A violent summer monsoon storm hit Phoenix Sky Harbor Sunday evening around
9pm and already has caused millions of dollars in damage. At least five
commercial aircraft were damaged..including several parked aircraft that were
pushed 40 feet by the wind. In addition to losing power at Terminals 2 & 3,
numerous private and corporate aircraft were damaged by wind gusts that
exceeded 75mph during the ninety minute storm. Many cargo containers were
uplifted by the high winds and damaged vehicles in long term parking lots.
The north runway, longest at Sky Harbor, is scheduled to reopen late Monday
afternoon after airport crews remove over an inch of dirt and gravel
deposited from the storm. In the meantime take offs and landings, which
because of runway separation cannot be done simultaneously, are limited to
the two south runways. Airport officials say it may take an additional two
days to reroute passengers affected by last night's storm and loss of the
north runway. Rainfall amounted to two inches, which represents 1.9 inches
of the current year to date amount!
