American, which bought TWA out of bankruptcy last year, said it will remove the TWA tag on flights operated by the old St. Louis-based carrier after July 31. "This next step makes it clear to consumers that they are flying American Airlines," said Mike Gunn, American's executive vice president of marketing. American said the change required approval by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Gunn called it the last major step from a customer's viewpoint of the integration of the two carriers. Other TWA functions, including reservations, advertising and airport check-in are already combined with American's operations. Most of TWA's planes have been repainted in American's colors and logo and have been reconfigured inside to provide more legroom, American said. TWA LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of American -- both are owned by AMR Corp. of Fort Worth -- will keep its separate air carrier certificate from federal aviation authorities until TWA planes and employees are fully merged into American over the next several years, American said. =20 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Copyright 2002 AP
