"The loan guarantee program was created as a vehicle of last resort for airlines that could not reasonably access the financial markets as a direct result of the events of Sept. 11," said Jeffrey Campbell, senior vice president and chief financial officer of American Airlines. "We are fortunate to be among the carriers that have sufficient cash, unencumbered assets and continuing access to external capital to operate without federal assistance," Campbell said. American Airlines owned two of the four airliners that terrorists hijack= ed and crashed on Sept. 11.
