The June 19 early evening incident involving a Cessna 182 level at 10,500 ft
that inadvertently strayed into the temporary flight restricted area
surrounding Washington, D.C., resulting in a fighter escort to Byrd Airport
in Richmond, Va., should serve as a reminder to Part 91 operators of the TFR
's boundaries. The TFR, not depicted on navigation charts but imposed after
September 11, prohibits Part 91 overflight operations within a 15-nm radius
of the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport VOR up to FL 180, said an
FAA spokesman. The spokesman said there have been several other accidental
violations of the Washington TFR, but he did not have details available if
certificate action in the form of suspension or fine had been taken against
any of the pilots. He added that possible certificate action against the
Cessna 182 pilot is "under investigation." The pilot will not face federal
criminal charges.
