BUCHAREST, Romania -- Millions of fruit flies have closed Otopeni Airport -- Romania's largest airport -- near Bucharest. The huge swarm of flies has stopped all take-off and landing of planes. The flies descended on the airport after they were moved from nearby houses by insecticide spraying. Airport authorities said the insects make it too dangerous to operate flights because the tiny creatures get into engines, plane instruments, and affect radar and airport communications. A flight from Bucharest to Bologna, Italy, had to return to the airfield just minutes after it took off because hundreds of the flies had been sucked into the plane's engine. A spokesman said the insects could cause real damage to the planes' equipment or cause disturbances within the cockpit. "It may sound funny, but in reality the flies are a danger to the planes and the passengers," said the spokesman.
