Fire Destroys Nebraska Airport Hangar, Beech 1900Ds A fire Tuesday night destroyed a hangar and the two Beech 1900D twin-turboprops inside at Central Nebraska Regional Airport (GRI) in Grand Island, Neb. The hangar, on the north side of the airport, was leased by Cheyenne, Wyo.-based commuter airline Great Lakes Aviation and used for aircraft maintenance. Doug Voss, Great Lakes CEO, told the Associated Press that the airplanes were worth about $4 million apiece. Construction of a new bi-fold hangar door was under way when the fire started. The cause is under investigation, but a preliminary report released by local fire officials yesterday blamed sparks from a cutting torch used earlier in the day during installation of the door. Officials speculate that sparks got into voids near the hangar roof and were fanned by winds that picked up late Tuesday afternoon. >From AIN
