Government extends insurance program for airlines

   (05-15) 11:46 PDT WASHINGTON (AP) --
Airlines can continue to buy government insurance against future terrori=
st
attacks through mid-June, the Transportation Department said Wednesday.
The 30-day extension is a temporary move while Congress considers
legislation to provide insurance for all industries against terrorist
attacks. In addition, the airline industry is considering setting up a
self-insurance program.
The government has always provided insurance for airlines flying
internationally when they could not buy private insurance. Since Sept. 11,
the government has made the insurance available for domestic flights as
well.
The program was supposed to expire May 19, but will be extended 30 days =
to
June 18. Transportation Department officials said they would extend the
program again if necessary.
