The loss of 17 cents a share widened from $1.6 million, or 4 cents a share, in the period a year earlier. Revenue rose 37 percent, to $246.2 million, helped by the acquisition of Polar Air Cargo. Hours flown, a measure of demand, at the Atlas Air unit fell 19 percent. Atlas is trying to lure more shipments by switching from providing aircraft, crews, maintenance and insurance under long-term contracts to combining goods from more than one customer on each plane and providing some regularly scheduled flights. "Until an economic recovery is clearly in full swing, we believe the air-cargo market will continue to be depressed," the chief executive, Richard Shuyler, said on a conference call with analysts and investors. "The April and May lull suggest the second quarter is probably not going to look an awful lot different from the first quarter in that regard." http://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/11/business/11ATLA.html?ex=1022128869&ei=1&en=0da1972eeda01c96 HOW TO ADVERTISE --------------------------------- For information on advertising in e-mail newsletters or other creative advertising opportunities with The New York Times on the Web, please contact onlinesales@nytimes.com or visit our online media kit at http://www.nytimes.com/adinfo For general information about NYTimes.com, write to help@nytimes.com.
