Lufthansa orders 15 Rolls-Royce engines for superjumbo jets

   (05-07) 05:09 PDT LONDON (AP) --
The German airline Lufthansa has agreed to buy Rolls-Royce Trent 900
engines for 15 of its new Airbus A380 jets in a deal worth $750 million,
Rolls-Royce said Tuesday.
"This is a significant order from one of the world's most prestigious fl=
ag
carriers who have committed to Trent power for their future large aircraft
fleet," said Mike Terrett, president of civil aerospace at Rolls-Royce.
"We're delighted to be extending our long-standing ties with Lufthansa."
Rolls-Royce is developing the Trent 900 engine specifically for the A380
superjumbo jet, which Airbus plans to deliver to carriers by 2006. The
planes are each expected to carry more than 550 passengers.
Lufthansa plans to accept its first A380 in 2007, Rolls-Royce said.
Singapore Airlines, Qantas Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways and the
International Lease Finance Corp. have also said they plan to buy the
Trent 900 engines.
