Emergency crews on major alert as Boeing 737 lands in Saskatoon with problem Canadian Press Sunday, April 28, 2002 SASKATOON (CP) - Emergency crews at the Saskatoon airport were put on a major alert Saturday when a Westjet plane was forced to make an unscheduled landing. Saskatoon assistant fire chief Leo Barrett said there was a problem with one of the engines on the Boeing 737, but the pilots managed to land the the plane safely, shortly before 7 p.m. There were 91 people on board. "It was a major standby for our fire equipment," Barrett said. "We had our crash fire rescue crews out there and additional crews from our other stations." Bill Restall, president of the Saskatoon Airport Authority, said the flight took off from Winnipeg and was bound for Edmonton. The passengers were taken off the plane using a mobile staircase and led into the airport terminal. "It is my understanding that Westjet was going to make alternative arrangements for them," Restall said. Neither Barrett nor Restall knew the specifics of the problem with the engine. No one from Westjet was immediately available for comment. Barrett said the fire department usually handles about 30 situations like this each year.
