My girlfriend used her expired Calif. drivers license as ID to fly from
San Jose to Austin on AA.  She had renewed by mail, but they hadn't sent
the new one yet.  There was no problem at check-in or boarding.   I
don't know whether it's officially OK, or they just weren't looking
carefully, or just didn't care.

*Theoretically*, expired documents should be valid ID but not valid for
the purpose issued. You can't drive with an expired license, but it
should be good ID.

I'd try to ask the airline or the TSA for an official ruling.
