Frontier's CEO retiring after guiding airline through growing pains

   (03-31) 09:21 PST DENVER (AP) --
Frontier Airlines chief executive Sam Addoms will retire Monday, leaving
behind and airline that has grown from a struggling startup to a robust
discount carrier.
Addoms, 62, joined Frontier in 1993, a year before it began flying, and
became CEO in 1995. He guided the airline through its transition from a
regional carrier to a discount airline challenging giant United Airlines,
which has one of its five hubs in Denver.
His approach was to build employee and customer loyalty while tightly
controlling costs.
"Sam's frugalness enabled us to stay afloat when everyone else was faili=
ng
around us," said Jim Sullivan, a Boeing 737 captain.
Frontier now has 2,400 employees and 30 aircraft. With Denver as its hub,
it flies to 29 cities, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth,
Phoenix, Los Angeles and Seattle.
Addoms attributed the airline's success to its original team of
executives, the addition of Jeff Potter as vice president for marketing,
employee loyalty and good luck.
Potter, 42, is now the company's president and chief operating officer a=
nd
will succeed Addoms as CEO. Addoms will remain chairman.
