British Airways and American Add Flights

March 19, 2002

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

LONDON, March 18 (AP) - American Airlines and British
Airways (news/quote), which cut services after the Sept. 11
attacks, said today that they were increasing the number of
flights on their trans-Atlantic routes.

Traffic on North Atlantic routes was down 7.7 percent in
February compared with the level a year earlier. That,
however, was an improvement over October's year-to-year
decline of 31.3 percent.

British Airways reported a 20 percent drop in traffic
volume in the fourth quarter. It said its February traffic
volume - measured in the distance flown by paying customers
- was down 2.5 percent from a year earlier. In January, the
figure was a decline of nearly 7 percent.

Traffic figures for American routes were 3.5 percent lower
in February, and 8 percent lower a month earlier, the
airline said.

A spokeswoman for American Airlines, a unit of the AMR
Corporation (news/quote), said the carrier would soon
announce a return to its pre-Sept. 11 schedule.
