Former Canada 3000 head proposes new regional airline Last Updated Fri, 08 Feb 2002 17:55:52 TORONTO - A consortium led by the former president of defunct carrier=20 Canada 3000 is planning a new airline that would operate from Toronto's=20 island airport to a variety of destinations within 90 minutes flying time.= =20 Regional Airlines Holdings says it's already lined up $550 million in=20 funding. The money would be used to buy 15 turboprop aircraft, put up a new= =20 terminal building, and build a bridge to the airport, which is now=20 accessible from the mainland only by a small car ferry. The consortium is= =20 headed by Robert Deluce, who was Canada 3000's president from 1988 to 1995.= =20 The plan is to service cities within 90 minutes flying time from Toronto =96= =20 within 500 nautical miles. The list includes Montreal, Ottawa, New York,=20 Detroit, Washington, Boston, and Chicago, among others. "This is a vital=20 economic development initiative for Toronto =96 it will attract new=20 investment to the city, catalyze waterfront development, generate important= =20 environmental benefits, and enhance Toronto's overall competitiveness as a= =20 world-class city," Deluce said in a statement. The plan faces several=20 hurdles. Nearby residents have long fought any plan to significantly expand= =20 the airport. It would need the approval of the city, the federal=20 government, and the Toronto Port Authority. And the federal transport=20 minister is on record as saying the island airport should be closed and=20 turned into parkland =96 the present status of most of the Toronto Islands= =20 lands.
