Chris, Most of the year LHR runways in use are 27L & 27R, but in summer 09L & 09R are sometimes in use. The designated area is on top of the Queen's Building, which is OK in June as the sun is high and it overlooks terminal 2 and a distant terminal 4, though a fair bit of traffic passes by. You'll need binoculars for spotting, and up to a 300mm lens for taxiway shots. Away from the terminal, a car can be better for both active runways, but public transport is OK for r/w 27: if 27R is in use landers can be shot from near the British Airways maintenance area. If 27L is in use, take the tube to Hatton Cross, and make your way to Myrtle Avenue, about 15 minutes walk from the tube station (a bit long to explain, buy a London map before you get there, or after you arrive, but make sure the airport is covered and its not an inner city map). Myrtle is best after 3pm when that runway tends to be used for landers anyway. LHR often changes from 27R to 27L at 1500L as a gesture to assist locals living nearby. In June (given the notorious UK weather) the light will be good for shots until 8.30pm, for spotting until 10pm (when everything at the airport pretty much shuts up for the night anyway.) I'll be going through LHR in June and was wondering where the best spotting places were. Would you be able to help me? Thanks, Chris Wallace
