Yes, thats how you make money and remain in business....satisfy the customers' needs and wants. However, this misjudgement didn't become evident until now because at the time, it made them money. Again, they didn't do a full SWOT analysis of their plan (SWOT = strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats).
