HALIFAX, January 16, 2002…..Today, Air Canada’s regional carrier, operating as AirBC, Air Nova, Air Ontario and Canadian Regional, announced that it will introduce six 50-seat Bombardier regional jets (CRJs) to its fleet in the spring of 2002.

Further announcements regarding the CRJ fleet's introduction into service and commercial plans will be made when details are finalized. As well, recently concluded collective agreements enable the airline to reinstate its fleet of ten British Aerospace 146 jets by the beginning of the second quarter of 2002.

"We ended 2001 on a positive note with the finalization of collective agreements with our pilots and maintenance division, as well as a tentative agreement with our flight attendants," said Joseph Randell, President of Air Canada’s regional carrier. "Today's announcement represents a significant move forward in renewing the regional jet fleet in accordance with the collective agreements in place with unions representing the pilots at both the mainline and regional carrier."

"The renewal of the fleet will significantly strengthen Air Canada Regional. We will be better prepared and ready to address the needs of our customers and communities as market forces begin to stabilize and passenger confidence returns. These changes to the fleet will result in reduced capacity as we continue to fit capacity with demand. It is still our intention to remove the Fokker F28s from our fleet," said Randell.

The lease agreement is with GE Capital Aviation Services for the six Bombardier regional jets. Air Canada’s regional carrier provides scheduled service to over 75 destinations in Canada and the United States utilizing a fleet of Beech 1900Ds, Dash 8 100/300s, Fokker F28s and British Aerospace 146 jets.
