Tobago calls for new BWIA flight (Trinidad Guardian) The Tobago House of Assembly and the Tourism Industrial Development Co are in talks with national carrier BWIA West Indies Airways to introduce a direct international flight to Tobago. The THA and Tidco are to discuss the transport issue with stakeholders in the tourism industry, and are also to report to BWIA on their recommendations, Tidco announced in a statement. BWIA, THA and Tidco officials met last week to discuss an increase in daily flights by the airline, which is the sole carrier between Trinidad and Tobago. BWIA took up the slack after Air Caribbean went bankrupt in 2000. Several international carriers had pulled out of the Tobago route in the past year. Tidco and the THA had negotiated a return of a few of these airlines. But Tobago wants BWIA to help with new flights. "The purpose of the meeting was to explore the possibility of the national airline, BWIA, commencing a weekly direct air service to Tobago from North America," Tidco stated. Last week's talks included Tidco vice-president Carla Noel, THA tourism secretary Neil Wilson and BWIA chief executive officer Conrad Aleong. Also present were BWIA's vice president of marketing Beatrix Carrrington and Chris James of the Tobago Hotel and Tourism Association. BWIA has agreed to provide a flight to Tobago from a North American port, which is still to be decided, Tidco stated. Tobago is expected to make recommendations to BWIA on Friday. "This recommendation will identify which North American port the flight will originate from based on an analysis of passengers." The industry hopes a flight would be agreed to by this year's summer season.
