Which I think was done to cut down on the number of FF points to dole out. For example, in its dying days Canadian was notorious for this trick. If you flew, say, Montreal-Tokyo, you'd normally connect in Vancouver. So you'd be awarded miles for the YUL-YVR sector, and for the YVR-NRT sector, based on the miles of those sectors. But if you are on a "direct" flight, they would only award the miles for the great circle distance between YUL and NRT. That's considerably less than the YUL-YVR + YVR-NRT. So they'd designate a flight number for YUL-NRT "with change of plane in YVR", and end up paying out less points. Thing is you took the exact same flights as before. And you'd be on a 744 on the YVR-NRT leg, and an A320 on the YUL-YVR leg. It was, in short, a scam because you certainly travelled the same (longer) distance, and (if in Y class) endured not only more time in cramped seats but got the "pleasure" of making a connection just the same.
