M4 uses balanced quotes; Autoconf sets the quotes to [ and ]. Quotes are only stripped when needed in m4, so as long as the definition is correctly quoted, any embedded [ and ] will be passed through, provided that they balance.
If you need unbalanced [ or ], that is why Autoconf has quadrigraphs... -- Jacob
