Fair enough. Would it be possible to remove the `ln -s file dir` check? And would it work for AC_PROG_LN_S to set `as_ln_s="CYGWIN=winsymlinks:nativestrict ln -s"`? or export the CYGWIN or MSYS env var in the configure and config.status scripts?
