FWIW I agree with Eric.  Having behind-the-scenes path probing for local
overrides is, IMO, asking for a lot of trouble.  It's far to easy to
drop a file on your system and forget about it it, leading to much
confusion and frustration a few months/years later.  Also consider the
support burden...

I just don't see the need for it.
