It did, but the UK had a 4-day Bank Holiday, which probably slowed a lot
of people here down (we only went back to work today).

There are several archive posts of mine about this if you have a look,
which basically produce a set of hacky (in the sense they rely upon
Autoconf internals) macros to achieve what you want, but don't get much
traction from anyone else.

Key point is you should be able to output the pkg-config file in your
configure script, so you don't need to wait until the library is
compiled, just until it has been configured.

There is an example of this in the Audacity code, the mailing list
archive should have some links to it.
