Which shell and version is being used?  Note that configure may
re-execute itself under another shell, so you might have to put
  set -x

in the second line of the configure script and look at the output.
(Please gzip large output if you must send it.)

I don't have access to such an old darwin system any more, and
it doesn't seem to happen on Darwin 10.4.0.
