Is it a good idea to use this to override symlinking to something
different?

Isn't this close to `AR=winzip GREP=awk'?
  (in this case, those tools could also be used as replacements
  for the tools used usually, if invoked in the `correct' special way..
  - but the `usage-semantics' are different)
