That may not be an unreasonable prereq these days.
The 3rd edition of the O'Reilly make book (2004) dropped coverage of all
other implementations, due to lack of interest. GNU make was everywhere
by then, probably even before then due to the long production cycle for
books.
Sounds like a good wishlist item autoconf 3.0.
