I have personally tried Kdevelop version 3 and indeed it *understands* and
modifies autoconf files. The same goes for the Eclipse plugin. To talk about
vi and emacs is difficult given, as you say, the amount of available
extensions, but at least Emacs has highlighting for autotools syntax.

But for sure MSVC is the only one on that list that has no extensions to
handle the autotools. That was the point of my post, because is the only in
the list that offers no advantage over any plain text editor.

hmm - since it's extensible, you're saying in effect that you're knowledgable about all implemented extensions, and that none of them apply.
