Typically this is done by saving and modifying variables such as
LDFLAGS, LIBS, CPPFLAGS, CFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, before respective tests
and restoring them afterwards if need be.  The Autoconf manual documents
which variables are used for which type of tests:
