I'm trying to do an autoreconf in the gnome-doc source, and I'm getting this error: ---(snip!)--- NONE:0: /pangocairo/bin/gm4: ERROR: end of file in string autom4te: /pangocairo/bin/gm4 failed with exit status: 1 ---(snip!)--- I know this works for some large combination of autotools and libtool because it has only recently broken in fink, and gnome-doc hasn't changed for some time. How do I go about debugging what's actually going wrong? The docs say it's a dangling quote, but everything seems quoted right in configure.in, and everything else comes from other projects' files which have (presumably) worked in the past. even running the failing autom4te command in "trace" mode isn't very enlightening: ---(snip!)--- aclocal: running autom4te --language Autoconf-without-aclocal-m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal/glib-gettext.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal/intltool.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal/pilot-link.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal/pkg.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/amversion.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/auxdir.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/cond.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/depend.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/depout.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/init.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/install-sh.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/lead-dot.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/make.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/missing.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/mkdirp.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/options.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/python.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/runlog.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/sanity.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/strip.m4 /pangocairo/share/aclocal-1.9/tar.m4 gnome-doc-utils.m4 --trace='AC_DEFUN:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AC_DEFUN_ONCE:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AU_DEFUN:$f:$n:$1' --trace='IT_PROG_INTLTOOL:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_SET_CURRENT_AUTOMAKE_VERSION:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_SET_OPTION:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_GLIB_DEFINE_LOCALEDIR:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_GLIB_GNU_GETTEXT:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_PROG_MKDIR_P:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_PYTHON_CHECK_VERSION:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_INIT_AUTOMAKE:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_AUTOMAKE_VERSION:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_MISSING_HAS_RUN:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AC_PILOT_LINK_HOOK:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_MISSING_PROG:$f:$n:$1' --trace='IT_PO_SUBDIR:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_OUTPUT_DEPENDENCY_COMMANDS:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AC_PILOT_LINK:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_PROG_INSTALL_STRIP:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_PKG_SHORT_ERRORS_SUPPORTED:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_SANITY_CHECK:$f:$n:$1' --trace='PKG_CHECK_EXISTS:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AC_PROG_INTLTOOL:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_PROG_TAR:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_AUX_DIR_EXPAND:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_DEP_TRACK:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_SET_OPTIONS:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_RUN_LOG:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_OUTPUT_DEPENDENCY_COMMANDS:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_IF_OPTION:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_MANGLE_OPTION:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_SET_LEADING_DOT:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_CONDITIONAL:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_SET_DEPDIR:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AM_DEPENDENCIES:$f:$n:$1' --trace='PKG_PROG_PKG_CONFIG:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_PROG_INSTALL_SH:$f:$n:$1' --trace='PKG_CHECK_MODULES:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_PATH_PYTHON:$f:$n:$1' --trace='_AC_AM_CONFIG_HEADER_HOOK:$f:$n:$1' --trace='GNOME_DOC_INIT:$f:$n:$1' --trace='AM_MAKE_INCLUDE:$f:$n:$1' configure.in NONE:0: /usr/bin/m4: ERROR: EOF in string autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1 aclocal: autom4te failed with exit status: 1 autoreconf: aclocal failed with exit status: 1 ---(snip!)--- autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.60 automake (GNU automake) 1.9.6 ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.5.22 (1.1220.2.365 2005/12/18 22:14:06) thanks! _______________________________________________ Autoconf mailing list Autoconf@xxxxxxx http://lists.gnu.org/mailman/listinfo/autoconf
