There are a number of examples around, showing how this may be achieved.
One such may be found in this autoconfiscated variant of `man'; (compare 
the `tools' directory to the rest of the build, and note how this is 
configured by the `MAN_AC_CONFIG_NATIVE' macro in the top level 
aclocal.m4):
