As far as I recall, there was a MS DOS release somewhere around
v6.something (which coincided with the release of win95) that included
VFAT support in the "DOS kernel" (if you can call it that.)  And I'm
pretty sure that FreeDOS has supported VFAT for a very long time.

Thus, if you are on a DOS system of new enough vintage to contain VFAT
support, then you can indeed use long file names, otherwise they will be
truncated.

But that's just from memory, I certainly haven't touched DJGPP or a MS
DOS system in ages.  I do remember using a long filename-capable MS DOS
at some point, though.
