perhaps the easiest way is to use automake.  Many projects use it, and they
all should support VPATH build.  I have just verified that gawk is OK,
but texinfo, sed, etc. are other good examples.

If you decide to use automake, I believe you find the automake manual very
helpful.  Alexandre had done great work.

With Automake, your project will support many things you haven't yet
thought of.
