Apparently you were correct, as obtaining autoconf 2.59, recreating the
configure script from the configure.ac file, and re-running ./configure
ends up running to completion.

(About all I had to do was set the M4 environment variable, despite
GNU m4 1.4 being in /usr/local/bin, and /usr/local/bin heading up my
PATH in front of /usr/ccs/bin.)
