2.58 problem: checking where .elc files should go...

I'm trying to install 2.58 on a solaris 9 system and "configure"
just hangs at the "checking where .elc files should go..." step.

If I was less tired I'd dig in to this.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how I can debug/fix this problem?
