IOW how many in-house completely locked-up > proprietary packages use them? My proprietary commercial project uses it. From my experience Autotools help keep the build scipts clean. Also you can easily find many examples of how to implement something with Autotools and such a knowledge base usually does not exist for a home-grown build system. Autotools also cut down the training and adaptation time --- would you hire a developer who cannot build autoconfiscated package? AFAICT Autotools are not best suited for releasing binary packages, but I would not say that this is a limitation. I use Autotools only on *NIX, I would expect that the view is different when you look through the Windows.
