Thought I haven't used CentOS in a couple of years:
You shouldn't have a mix on *el5*
Local Mirror to me:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/centos/6.4/os/x86_64/Packages/

rpm -qa | grep el5 # should be wrong version for CentOS 6.x

If you just type "yum" in the terminal,
does "distribution-synchronization Synchronize installed packages to
the latest available versions"
--releasever=RELEASEVER
set value of $releasever in yum config and repo files

come back as a command?

If yes, it may be worth running:
yum distro-sync --releasever=6*
(that 6* may not be correct,Google or ask on a Cent-list.)
