pls consider:

   Release: 5.5
   Codename: Final
   ~ root # yum groupinfo 'Development Tools'|egrep 'Description|perl'
Description: These tools include core development tools such as automake, gcc, perl, python, and debuggers.

'perl' shows up in the Description for
the group 'Development Tools', but inot in the list of
packages given by yum groupinfo - appears to a laymen as a bug?

If 'Development Tools' does not supply perl, which yum group does?

# rpm -q perl
perl-5.8.8-27.el5

One of the packages dependent on perl package in CentOS 5.x is package 'automake' which IS in 'Development Tools' group. So, perl will be installed as depandancy when you install that yum group.
