You can change repository links to instead of $release use 5.4. You will of course have to make sure that you only use repository servers that have separate 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5 folder branches beside regular 5 folder branch.

Visit repositories via web browser and you will understand what I mean.
