Short answer: it's not supported.

While it can be done (I've personally done it several times in the
past) it can only be considered as unsupported do-it-at-your-own-risk
method. So unless you know how to maintain different versions of
python, yum, and rpm, and fixing a "broken" system, I suggest you do
it the "normal" way, using RHEL5 install CD.
