Your options are few. Installing python 2.3.5 via tar made it so that
the python modules installed via rpm are not available.

Your choices really are:

1. uninstall python 2.3.5
2. rebuild everything for it.

As a general rule it is not a good idea to ever install pkgs via tar
when you're using a package managed distribution.
