Bingo! So last time I build my own 'nix environment I was working on suse about 380 years ago and it was all web searches for rpm's and that stupid rpm commandline which I never fully got the hang of. YUM not only is a relief and finally an answer to the standard windows installer but it actually blows the windows installer away with it's dependency checking and update daemon.
