You can do remote server upgrades by vnc kickstarts.

yes - but the shift from 2.4 kernel to 2.6 kernel requires some
trickery.

If you're committed to doing it this way strip the box down to as few
pkgs as possible. It will make the multiple upgrades much faster and
more likely to work.

and these are on a 7.3 box?

run:

python --version
rpm --version
rpm -q rpm-python yum
