To downgrade, see above. To ignore dependencies (for example, if it needs xorg-devel, but on your system it exists as xorg-x11-devel), you should stick with rpm --force. That is, assuming you know what you're doing. IMHO a more elegant way when faced with dependecy problem is to find an RPM that fits your distro, or create your own rpm from either the .src.rpm or simply repackage the original rpm's binaries.
