Hmm, ok, I'll do the update to FC4 again so it hangs at booting the new
kernel and ask my provider what's the error message.
This is a real physical root server.

Can you ask your colo provider to take a look at the console?
That's probably about device naming (hda-> sda or something), or other
hardware-related issues (perhaps NIC).
Also, is that a real physical server, or a virtual environment (a la
OpenVZ/Virtuozzo)? In the second case there should not be any hardware
problems...
