Since posting it, I've decided that I should not pursue any further trying to upgrade to version 3.0.4 the latest version of yum that came with my distro, Fedora 3. I had wanted to do so because doing so was one of the things necessary in order for me to be able to create a customised Fedora 6 live CD while continuing to use Fedora 3. However, I've now reluctantly accepted that I must do a "real" upgrade to Fedora 6, as a result of which I assume I'll get the latest version of yum anyway.
