It turns out that the RPMs in question had an Obsoletes line that
obsoleted themselves.  After removing this line, yum works fine.  It
does seem a shame that yum isn't smart enough to notice this and exit
gracefully.  Instead it dies with:

	RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded

Unfortunately, I can't fix this myself (don't know any python).  Thanks,
